Wassaliens And Other Unexpected Noises is the new tape from Zander
Nyrond, released on May 1st 1999 at the Triple Party in Gravesend. (The Triple
Party was the celebration of Talis' birthday, Annie's birthday and Rafe's 50th
birthday.)
The cover artwork (shown here) was drawn by Zander. I scanned it in and spent many happy hours colouring it in using PhotoShop on my Mac. The graphics tablet was extremely useful for this task. This tape was the biggest project so far for the Peering Bear, involving the recording of a huge cast of many over two very intensive recording weekends, which were just a fortnight apart. As usual, Sara took the kids away for the weekends, which was very kind of her (and her mum!); and the house filled with hard-working filkers. Thanks to Anne Whitaker for her managerial manoeuverings! We didn't have a mix-down weekend, because of the amount of material and the fullness of our diaries. Instead, I got on and mixed down as many songs as I could without Zander's direct input. I then put these songs onto cassettes (Snapshot 1 and Snapshot 2) which I sent to Zander for comments. Mostly, I got it right; but there were a few songs that needed redoing for one reason or another. The complexities of mixing this tape forced me (as if I were unwilling!) to go and buy a new mixing desk; which in turn inspired me to throw together two new songs (1, 2). Zander came over for Mix-Down Day (I believe there's a song, Zander?) where we recorded the last bits that needed capturing (spoken intros and the like) and attacked the mixing down of the remaining songs, except for one which needed the re-recording of FanTom's vocal 'cos I'd screwed the levels up the first time around.
With all that done, I performed all the mastering alone, and carried the production
through to that happy moment at the Triple Party where I placed a box of
tapes into Zander's hands.
