Paul Bristow and I billed ourselves as B&B (which stands for
"Bed and Breakfast" here in the UK
). We
prepared a "set" (a bunch of songs to be presented as a performance)
which was scheduled to open the convention. We had already prepared
a backing tape in my MIDI studio, which
was used for some of our songs. I played synthesizer or accordion for
some of the others. Here's what we performed:
The Doctor Who theme
- Me playing an accordion solo!

Who's (that) girl?
- Paul's filk of the eponymous Eurythmics song. I played the piano
(my Wavestation, actually), and the backing tape played the drums.

Beauty and the Beast
- A Bristow original - his words (which he sang) and his music (which
we sequenced and recorded on the backing tape). He's kindly provided
the lyrics.
Fatal Attraction
- A song I wrote about a star forming from interstellar gas. Me singing
to a backing tape of the piano part of a song by Schubert. Here are the
lyrics.
Excited State
- A song I wrote about an electron that's getting spooked by a photon.
I sang it with Paul singing a vague accompaniment. Here are the
lyrics.
Norwegian Blue - The Parrot Musical
- The legendary Monty Python "Parrot Sketch" adapted by Paul and
performed by the two of us to the music of Enya's song "Carribean Blue".
Very silly!

The Texture Map Song
- This was one of those songs I write whenever I attend a training
course; it's an urge that comes upon me. (I make sure I sing it to
the class at the end of the course
.)
For our performance, I sang it, Paul joined me for the choruses, and
the backing tape did the rest. Here are the lyrics.
Fast Enough
- A Blake's Seven-inspired filk by Paul, to the music of "Strong Enough"
by Sheryl Crow. He sang it to his cleverly-devised backing tape.
Arthur's Lament
- Another filk by Paul; this time the original was "Sorry seems to be
the hardest word" by Elton John. Paul sang his lyrics (inspired by The
Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy) and I played the Wavestation and
wore a very silly hat.

My Old Man's A Vogon
- based on "My Old Man's A Dustman"; words by Mark Sinden, sung by
Paul with me playing the accordion.
