Nycons are held about twice a year at the
house of Zander Nyrond, who is prominent British filker who regards
all filkers as family. He and Countess Alyxides throw open their
house in Westbury, Wiltshire for an extended weekend where filkers
can get together and sing at each other (if they can find room
among the cats). These "conventions" are completely informal and
programme-less, but filk circles and other activities seem to
coalesce into existence of themselves, and so they actually represent
a fairly important part of the British filk calendar.
My first one was Nycon III, which took place over the weekend of 23rd March 1996.
There's always an award ceremony at a Nycon, and I'm proud to say I got an
award for "Best New Song and Best New Accordionist", though Zander
couldn't actually identify which of my songs was the best new
one. Maybe he just meant "best new filker". Or maybe it's only because
I sang the loudest. I took Sara and Zoë with me, and Zoë won a plastic dinosaur for "Youngest Attender". Of course, one could argue that the award should have gone to our bump...
Here's a picture of me playing something or other on the accordion at a later
Nycon, but I'm afraid I can't remember which one it was. As you can see,
Harry has made the transition from Bump to Boy.
